Hi, my name is Sarah Reeves, and I’ve been a pediatric occupational therapist since December 2019. What ultimately led me to Myofascial Release (MFR), though, wasn’t my professional background — it was my son.
I have two boys, both born with latch and feeding challenges. My first son was able to improve his latch, feeding, and weight gain after a frenectomy; though looking back, I now know how much he could have benefitted from bodywork. My second son, however, continued to struggle tremendously even after his procedure. He had difficulty healing, poor latch, inadequate weight gain, horrible reflux, trapped gas, significant overall body tension, and eventually developed mild torticollis and plagiocephaly.
For months, we did all the “right” things. All the OT things. All the feeding therapy things. All the lactation things. And still, we struggled.
Our son was labeled “severe.” He consistently transferred only half an ounce whether he latched for 20 minutes or for an hour, and he struggled to achieve an appropriate latch on a bottle as well. Our days revolved entirely around feeding — including triple feeding, providing 24 ounces per day via bottle, and constant attempts at nursing. It was exhausting physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Eventually, our incredible lactation consultant referred us to Myofascial Release. That referral changed everything for our family.
After just one MFR session, we saw a different baby. For the first time, he seemed able to truly see and engage with the world around him. I could set him down without tears. When he cried, it sounded different — not cries of pain and discomfort, but cries for connection and attention.
After his second session, he began consistently transferring 4.5 ounces in less than half the time it previously took. He quickly started gaining weight. His personality came alive. His head turn preference and body tightness began fading.
I knew I had to learn more.
So our whole family loaded up and drove 13 hours to North Carolina so I could attend a pediatric-specific MFR seminar. (And if you don’t know what a Yoto Player is, let me be the first to tell you — it is one of the best investments we’ve ever made, our 4-year-old goes nowhere without it and we might not have survived the trip otherwise!)
The seminar was incredible. I learned so much, and it was especially meaningful that my son was able to participate during the course as well. I came home able to continue using these techniques with him, and he loved it.
Since then, I’ve continued pursuing education in Myofascial Release because I know firsthand the difference it can make — not only as a therapist, but as a mother.
I can’t imagine not sharing this work with other families who are searching for answers, support, and hope.
